The difference
A red cross tells you nothing. Lumi answers in the exercise — why this ending, why not that word — then puts the correction back in the queue.
Will this work if I have never studied a language? Yes. A short greetings check decides whether you need that unit or can skip it.
How long until I can hold a real conversation? Long enough to land and get through the first week of errands, not fluent. The free units are that first stretch.

How is this different from Duolingo?
Duolingo teaches the same course to everybody. Lumi asks why you are learning and writes the course for that, and when you get something wrong you can ask why and get an answer in the exercise instead of a red cross.
Does it help with pronunciation?
Yes. Every phrase has native-quality audio you tap to hear, including from a home-screen icon. In the lesson you can try saying it back. On Chrome, Edge, or Safari, Lumi compares what the browser heard to the phrase. Firefox cannot score this. An iPhone home-screen icon often cannot run Speak; open the site in Safari if it fails. Pronunciation is part of the exercise, not a separate speaking mode.
Which languages can I learn?
Spanish, French, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Dutch — from English. Each has 32 hand-written topics as the default path, and a goal replaces that with a generated one.
Do I have to use the goal feature?
No. Every language has a full hand-written path you can work straight through. The generated curriculum is there for when you have a specific reason and a deadline.
Does it work offline?
Lessons and your progress do, and everything syncs when you reconnect. The tutor needs a connection because it is a live model. Offline lessons are one of the Pro perks.
How accurate is the AI?
The vocabulary in the default paths is hand-written, not generated. Generated courses and tutor explanations come from a language model and are usually right but not always — it is early software built by one person, and if you find something wrong, tell me.
