Learn Mandarin

Learn Mandarin built for you

Lumi Language is Mandarin for meeting family in Shanghai, two weeks in Chengdu, or opening a call with a Shenzhen supplier. You get pinyin with every word, and the first lessons are the sentences you will actually say — not a character-drilling app that never lets you speak.

Not “Mandarin, beginner” — “meeting my partner's family in Shanghai in December — I want to talk with their grandparents”.

Family-table phrases before colours and farm animals.

First-month Mandarin phrases

  • Housing — Viewing a flat, asking what is included, agreeing a date.
  • Town hall — Registering, asking where to queue, the document they will ask for.
  • Doctor — Booking, saying where it hurts, understanding the next step.
  • Neighbours — The first hello in the stairwell, and the first small ask.

Questions

Do I have to learn characters first?

No. Every word shows characters and pinyin. You can type answers in pinyin. Characters come with the words you need, not as a separate mountain to climb before you speak.

Is this Mandarin or Cantonese?

Mandarin, written in simplified characters, with pinyin. Not Cantonese.

Can I practise tones?

Tap hear on a word for native audio, including a slow version. The tutor can talk about a tone you keep missing; it cannot hear you unless you use the microphone.

Will this work if I only have a fortnight?

Yes, if you say so. A two-week trip produces a short, practical course. A family visit produces different lessons than a supplier call.
