What to say at a German Anmeldung appointment

You book a Termin, bring your passport, a signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung and a filled form, say you are there to register, and walk out with the Meldebestätigung. You have 14 days from move-in to register.

The folder is the job. Berlin's official Anmeldung page is blunt about the deadline: if this is your only home or your main home in the city, müssen Sie sich innerhalb von 14 Tagen nach Ihrem Einzug anmelden. The office does not care about your streak. It cares that the papers match and that you can answer what the clerk asks.

The German Amt phrase page has the short lines for the queue. This guide is the rest: booking the Termin, the landlord form that is not optional, Anmeldung versus Ummeldung versus Abmeldung, and the questions they ask you at the counter.

Book the Termin before you need the paper

In Berlin, Munich and Hamburg you book online. Search Anmeldung einer Wohnung and the city. The Bürgeramt is the citizens' office; in some towns it is the Einwohnermeldeamt or the Rathaus. Same job, different door.

Slots in big cities vanish. Book as soon as you have a move-in date, even if the appointment itself lands after day fourteen. Showing up three weeks later with a confirmation email from day twelve is a different conversation from showing up with nothing. Walk-ins exist in some places and the wait is long; do not plan on one in Berlin.

You will get a Vorgangsnummer. That is the number on the screen in the waiting room. Lose it and you call 115 and ask for it back.

Fill in the Anmeldeformular (sometimes Meldeschein) at home. Doing it in pencil at the kitchen table is slower than doing it at the counter with a queue behind you, and slower is what you want. You are copying your own passport into German bureaucratic boxes. The field that bites people is religion: tick a church and church tax follows. If you do not know what a box is asking, leave it blank and ask at the desk rather than guessing.

Berlin now lets some people register online: adult German or EU citizens who already live in Germany, with a BundID account and an Ausweis that has eID switched on. The same official page says the online path does not work with an electronic residence permit (eAT). First registration after arriving from abroad — EU or not — is in person. That is the case this article is for.

The one form your landlord has to sign

Berlin's required-documents list puts the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung next to your passport. It is the landlord's written confirmation that you moved in. The rental contract does not replace it. The official page says so in one line: Die Vorlage eines Mietvertrages ersetzt nicht die Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.

Ask for it the week you sign the lease, not the morning of the Termin. It has to name the Wohnungsgeber, the owner if that is someone else, the move-in date, the address, and the people who are registering. Your landlord has two weeks after you move in to hand it over. If they stall, you usually cannot finish the Anmeldung without it. Come back with the form.

A Hauptmieter who is subletting can sometimes sign it, but only if the actual landlord allowed the sublet. If a listing says you cannot register at the address, that is not a quirk. That is a flat you cannot use to open a bank account.

Bring, in a folder:

• passport or national ID
• the filled Anmeldeformular
• the signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
• the rental contract anyway — not required, useful when the address on the form does not match what the clerk expects
• marriage or birth certificates if you are registering a family

You do not pay for the Anmeldung itself.

At the counter — what they ask, what you say

Hand over the folder. Do not start with your life story. The German lines that open the appointment:

• Ich möchte mich anmelden.
• Hier ist mein Pass.
• Hier sind meine Unterlagen.
• Können Sie das bitte langsamer wiederholen?
• Können Sie das bitte aufschreiben?
• Bekomme ich die Meldebestätigung sofort?

The rest of the queue vocabulary is on the Amt phrase page. Do not try to memorise that whole list for this visit.

They will ask things that are not on your rehearsal list:

• Previous address — the last place you lived, even abroad. Street and city is enough if the form already has it.
• *Is this the Hauptwohnsitz?* — yes if this is your only or main home in Germany; no only if you truly keep another main residence.
• Marital status — the status on your papers, not a story.
• Religion (on the form) — leave blank or ask at the desk if you do not want church tax. Do not guess.
• Who else is moving in — names that match the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.

Do not count on English. Some clerks speak some; the office runs in German. Plan on German.

In most offices you walk out with the Meldebestätigung. Berlin's in-person page says after they check the documents erhalten Sie sofort die Meldebestätigung. Names for the same sheet wander — Meldebescheinigung, Meldebestätigung, Anmeldebestätigung — but it is one page with your name and the new address. Photograph it on the steps. Banks, employers and the health-insurance office will ask for a copy.

Check the spelling of your name and the date of birth before you leave the desk. Fixing a typo now is a sentence. Fixing it in three weeks is another Termin.

The tax ID (steuerliche Identifikationsnummer) is not handed over at the desk. It arrives by post a few weeks later. Put your name on the letterbox the day you get the keys, or the letter goes back and you start again.

Anmeldung, Ummeldung, Abmeldung — and when they send you away

These are three different jobs. Book the wrong one and you lose the slot:

• Anmeldung — first registration at an address in this city
• Ummeldung — a move inside the same city
• Abmeldung — leaving the city or the country

If they send you away, write the list they give you before you leave the building. Ask what is missing and whether you can keep today's Termin for a return visit. Then book the next slot before you walk out if the machine or the clerk will let you.

A late registration can be fined. Enforcement is uneven. Do not use that as a plan. Use it as the reason you book the slot the week you sign the lease.

Once you have the Meldebestätigung you can open the bank account, start the health insurance, and put the phone contract in your name. That is why the appointment exists. If you want audio before you sit down, learn German for a move — Anmeldung and the month you land — and practise the Amt unit. Generated lines come from a language model and are usually right, not always; the clerk in front of you decides whether the folder is complete.
